P5-7 activities for Start a Heart Day 2018
Today is “Restart A Heart Day”.
Restart A Heart Day is a fairly new initiative which was set up by the European Resuscitation Council in 2015 to highlight the importance of learning how to save someone in an emergency situation through the use of CPR.
Today, Primary 5, 6 and 7 were invited to learn more about the topic, with a visit from one of our parents Maria McKeating. Maria is a cardiac nurse in the ICU ward in the Royal Hospital in Belfast.
Maria talked us through the equipment which is used in the hospital when someone undergoes heart surgery. We got to try on oxygen masks, look at breathing tubes and we even got to look at a nebuliser which is given in hospital to help people experiencing breathing difficulties.
We learned the importance of going to the dentist every six months, of keeping ourselves fit and healthy and also how important it is to keep cuts and grazes clean and covered.
We talked about tetanus vaccinations and why it’s important to have these if we get bit by an animal.
After our discussion about keeping our hearts as healthy as possible, Maria taught us how to perform CPR. Each of us got the opportunity to practise performing CPR on the mannequins.
We would like to thank Maria for giving up her time to lead us in CPR training, it was a fantastic opportunity for our children to learn this life saving skill.
